The great thing about yoga is that it can help anyone lose the pounds, regardless of what age they are. Different Kinds of Yoga

What beginners may not know about is that there are different kinds of yoga. The more popular ones include:

  • Hatha yoga –  Hatha is the suggested kind of yoga for beginners, since the movements are very gentle and slow-paced, allowing them to learn the basic poses in yoga.
  • Bikram hot yoga is probably one of the forms of yoga that are most effective in weight loss, because this is performed in a hot room in order to help the muscles relax and for the practitioners to sweat in order to clean their systems.
  • Ashtanga asana. Like Bikram, Ashtanga asana is an effective weight loss program because it demands more physical movements.

Basic Yoga Poses for Beginners

Some basic poses for beginners include:

  • Adho Mukha Svanasana. Also known as the Downward Facing Dog. Stand with your feet flat on the ground. Bend forward slowly, your arms stretched forward until your palms touch the floor. Your buttocks should be raised and your head should be parallel to your spine. Inhale and exhale as you hold the position.
  • Balasana. Also called Child’s Pose, and usually done after Adho Mukha Svanasana. Kneel on the floor, your thighs resting lightly on your calves. Spread your knees wide, ensuring that the toes of your feet touching together. Bend your torso so that your belly is resting between your thighs while your forehead touches the floor. Extend your arms forward and let your palms rest on the floor. Inhale and exhale as you hold the position.
  • Siddhasana. Also called the Accomplished Pose. Sit on the floor with your legs crossed, with your hands resting on your knees or on your lap, palms facing up. Raise your head to lengthen the spine, even as you drop your shoulders, lean back, and press your chest forward. If you want, you can use what is called the hand mudra, wherein your index fingers will touch the thumbs of the same hand, the three fingers extended forward. Inhale and exhale as you hold the position.

Contrary to popular opinion, yoga weight loss doesn’t mean that you need to twist your body into an impossible position. While you learn more advanced postures, these are some basic poses that you can always go back to. They’ll either help you relax or help you as gentle exercises.
