Yoga Benefits-Chakras and Postures-Introduction
Within our bodies there are energy centers called chakras, there are seven chakras located at key points in your body, each chakra has certain qualities, color, and a yoga posture or asana associated with it. Our objective is to energize or open these chakras through the practice of yoga.

The first chakra is located at the base of the spine, its called “Muladhara” meaning “root”, the colour associated with this chakra is red, your health, constitution, and security are rooted here.
The yoga posture that helps to open the root chakra is “setu bandhasana” or “bridge posture”.
When the root chakra is working effectively we are grounded, this allows us to rest properly.
The second chakra is located in the lower abdomen, it’s called “svadhisthana” meaning “sweetness”, the colour associated with this chakra is orange, sexuality, pleasure, and nurture are key here.
The yoga posture that helps to open this chakra is “bhujangasana” or “cobra posture”.
Our desire for warmth, nurturing and touch is important here, but with balance in mind, overindulgence causes imbalances.
The third chakra is located at the solar plexus, it’s called “manipura” meaning “lustrous gem”, the colour associated with this chakra is yellow, The glands and systems affected here are, pancreas, adrenal gland, and digestive system.
The yoga posture that helps to focus energy here is “dhanaurasana” or “the bow posture”.
If this chakra is closed, your feelings will be blocked, you may not feel the deeper emotions we are capable of.
The fourth chakra is located at the heart and it’s called “Anahata” it’s a function is love and understanding. The area of the body affected by this chakra are the thymus, lungs, heart, arms, and hands, the color associated with this chakra is green.
The yoga posture that is best used to focus energy here is “ushtrasana” or “the camel”, the Cobra could also be used here.
Love at the heart chakra is one of acceptance of our place in the world.
The fifth chakra is located in the throat area, it’s called “visuddha” meaning “purification”, the colour associated with this chakra is blue. The areas of the body affected are thyroid, parathyroid, shoulders, arms, and hands.
The yoga posture that’s best used to open this chakra is “matsyasana” or “the fish”.
kindness, honesty, and wisdom can be conveyed through this chakra by using thoughtful words.
The sixth chakra is located right above and between your eyes and is called “Ajna” meaning “to perceive”, the color associated with this chakra is indigo. The parts of the body affected here are the pineal gland and the eyes.
The best posture used here is seated yoga mudra.
The seventh chakra is located at the top of the head and is called “Sahasrara” meaning “thousandfold”, also known as the crown chakra, parts of the body affected are the central nervous system and cerebral cortex.
The color associated here is violet, this chakra is deeply tied to your consciousness and place in the grand scheme of things, all that deals with the higher self is here, meditation is the key.
